Writing about Witness, John Waters said he couldn’t understand why Hollywood would make an entire movie about people whose religion forbids them going to the movies. During the 108 minutes of Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up, I kept thinking that I was watching the find of people—and the kind of art—that I go to the movies to get away from.

Showing Up is a wan little movie about a wan little woman who makes wan little art that her wan little friends exclaim over at their wan little receptions.
